Washington Square
Parents play an important part in the development of a child's self image. Appreciation of the childs achievements goes a long way in forming the child’s self esteem. Undeserved criticisms lead to deep rooted self doubts. Washington Square is a good movie to see how that works.
Catherine’s mother dies while giving birth to her. Her father, a doctor is deeply saddened by this death and develops a hatred for the child. All through her childhood the child makes desperate attempts to please her father, but she always fails. This forms the background of this very interesting tale of a disturbed relationship between a father and a daughter.
Catherine views herself through her father’s eyes and develops a very low self esteem. The story takes an interesting turn when Catherine falls in love with a man whom the father does not approve of. She goes through a conflict between listening to the voice of her heart or trying to please her father who means the world to her.
The movie depicts this struggle and the emotional roller coaster that she goes through in her life and the final resolution of the problem.
