Sylvia
Sylvia is based on a true story of the poet Sylvia Plath. The movie has merit for those whose passion is poetry. But my interest here is from the viewpoint of Psychiatry.
The movie is depressing, just like the periods of depression that some people experience. Sylvia shares her painful experiences of depression with you. If you have a family member or friend who has been diagnosed with depression and you have a hard time understanding what depression is, then watch this movie. Definitely do not watch it if you are interested in watching a heroic or a romantic movie. Sylvia is a well made and accurate documentary.
Gwyneth Paltrow has been able to convey to the audience the pain and suffering that thousands of people suffering with Depression go through. The pace of the movie, the background music, the expressions on Gwyneth Paltrow’s face and the overall feeling of hopelessness and emptiness that is built up as the movie progresses can become stifling. When you start experiencing this feeling you will realize how sad the experience of this illness
can be. You can witness the progression of the illness, untainted with any attempt at treatment. In the nineteen fifties and sixties there was not much in the form of treatment.
You will be able to see how the symptoms are triggered by the events in Sylvia’s life. You will see how her past experiences of the death of her father color the world that she perceives. Her fear of being abandoned by the people that she loves is the filter through which Sylvia views the world. It is interesting to see how the relationship between Sylvia and her husband becomes more and more complex. There are some who feel that Sylvia got a raw deal in the relationship. There are others who believe that she drove the relationship to the point that it reached. I will leave the verdict up to you. But it is true that the complexities in a disturbed relationship are brought out very well in the movie.
So, if you have the will and the courage to delve into the life of a depressed person, go and watch the movie Sylvia.
