| Punch Drunk Love |
| Punch drunk love is a story about a person with a psychiatric problem and
how he overcomes it. Such movies, if well made, usually do have a positive
impact on me. This one was pretty well made. |
| Adam Sandler very aptly portrayed the role of a person with a personality
disorder. His gestures, posture, expressions and the tone of his voice were
just what one would expect from such a person. Seeing him in that role, his
sisters' intrusion in his life and privacy seemed very natural. |
| If you can tolerate the slow pace for the first half hour or so, you will be
rewarded with the pleasure of watching a blossoming romance and his
courageous confrontation of his personality issues. |
| The major drawback of this movie is the perpetuation of the myth: 'love can
cure'. It is this wrong assumption that makes thousands of people (especially
women) to stick indefinitely with patients of personality disorder, with the
hope that they could rescue him. Often, such patients end up becoming
more and more exploitative of and dependant on their partners. |
| The role of Emily Watson as a woman who accepts him 'as he is', is
definitely a part of the solution. But they also need to be gently pushed and
confronted. The miraculous recovery after falling in love can be very
appealing and raise false expectations. Usually these people require patient,
long-term work to get over their long-standing interpersonal and
psychological difficulties. |
| I would recommend the movie as an overall pleasurable experience but not
to be taken literally. 'Love' cannot replace painstaking hard work. |
