A Beautiful Mind
A Beautiful Mind is a modern classic. It stands out amongst all other movies made on the subject of Psychiatry.
The movie comes very close to letting the audience have a direct experience as to what psychosis is like. Russell Crowe superbly portrays the feelings and conflicts that a person going through psychosis experiences. The structure of the movie aptly leads the viewer into the world of the patient, who is unaware of the illness. I have not seen another movie which has conveyed that sense so well.
Through the role of Jennifer Connelly, one can empathize with the spouse of a sick person. The movie very convincingly deals with the effect of the illness on the relationship, especially on issues such as raising children and sex.
The plot is exciting enough to keep the interest of the audience alive. Every actor and actress has done justice to their roles.
The heroic part, that is the way John Nash handles his illness after he acheives insight, is very inspiring. His commitment to his relationship and work and the peace he makes with his symptoms is very moving.
I do not know the historical details of John Nash’s life. But if they were different from the movie, then I would not want to know them. I would like to preserve the image of John Nash as portrayed in the Beautiful Mind, in my mind.
